Are your potential owners trying to choose between a male or female puppy? Discover the key pros and cons of each to help them find the best fit puppy for their home, lifestyle, and family.

Bringing home a puppy is a big decision—and choosing between a male or female pup is one of the first questions owners will be considering.
While personality and breed matter most, there are some general gender-based differences worth considering. This guide breaks down the pros and cons of male vs. female puppies to help navigate this decision.
Before considering anything else, I always ask my owners if there is another dog in the home, or another dog that visits often. That dogs needs and behaviours should be considered in the equation, we want to plan for positive and balanced relationships between our dogs, therefore taking into account the existing dog’s needs and behaviours is crucial.
Pros of Male Puppies
• Affectionate and Loyal
Males are often more physically affectionate and enjoy being close to their humans.
• Even Temperament After Neutering
Neutering usually reduces sexually motivated behaviours and marking behaviours, resulting in a stable, friendly personality.
• Typically More Outgoing
Male dogs are often a bit more sociable and eager to meet new people and pets.
Cons of Male Puppies
• Marking & Territorial Behaviour
Intact males may mark territory inside and out. Neutering helps, but the habit can persist.
• Easily Distracted
Especially during adolescence, male pups may be more distracted during training.
• Rougher Play Style
They can be a bit more rambunctious, which may not suit quieter households or small children.
Pros of Female Puppies
• Mature Faster
Female puppies tend to be quicker learners in the early stages.
• Less Likely to Mark or Wander
Especially when spayed, females are less inclined to escape or leave scent markings.
• Balanced Affection
Often affectionate but not overly clingy—many owners find them emotionally balanced.
Cons of Female Puppies
• Heat Cycles (if not spayed)
Female dogs go into heat about every 6–12 months, which can cause unwanted mess, changes to management routines and behaviour changes.
• Hormonal Mood Shifts
Some females experience mood changes or phantom pregnancies.
• Protective Tendencies
Females may become more protective of their family or territory.
Male vs. Female: Which Puppy is Right for You?
While gender-based traits exist, focus on the impact of individual personality, breed, training, and socialisation. These factors have a far bigger impact on a puppy’s behaviour. Some males are calm lap dogs; some females are testing—it all depends on the dog. It’s difficult not to generalise in a blog post, remind your owners that every dog is different, just like every person is different.
The best advice? Encourage your owners to do their research on breed and expected breed traits, and then create a space for them to spend time with a few puppies of each gender and help them choose based on your advice as the Breeder, and drill down to the individual puppy that best suits their lifestyle and expectations for dog ownership.
Ultimately whether choosing a male or a female puppy, owners should remember that they are in for a journey full of love, laughs, and learning. It is important to research and understand the general tendencies of males and females, but choosing the right puppy should never just boil down to gender. It is a decision that is based on several factors, and they all hold equal weight.
